Jack White fans got quite the show Friday night when the White Stripes guitarist/singer and Third Man Records founder proposed to his girlfriend, Olivia Jean, during his Detroit concert. After the Black Belles singer answered yes, White said to the crowd, “It’s been such a great day, mind if we get married right now?” which they did during the encore.

Earlier in the day, before headlining a sold-out show at Masonic Temple in his hometown of Detroit, MI, Jack White performed the national anthem at the Detroit Tigers season opener and released a new solo album, Fear of the Dawn, which is the first of two previously announced LPs. The high point of his jam-packed day, however, was no doubt his rapid onstage engagement and marriage to Olivia Jean, another Detroit native, who performed with her band Black Belles to open the show. Friday’s concert served as the kick-off to White’s Supply Chain Issues world tour.

During his set, Jack White invited his now-wife to join him in singing the White Stripes’ “Hotel Yorba”, which includes a verse that says, “Let’s get married / in a big cathedral by a priest / ’cause if I’m the man that you love the most / you could say, ‘I do’ at least.” Before the song reached that verse, White stopped the performance and gestured for his assistant to start recording. “I’ve got a question for you,” he said to Olivia Jean. “Will you marry me?”

After producing a ring and placing it on Jean’s finger, White carried his bride-to-be offstage to the accompaniment of humming feedback from his guitar amp. The engagement was short, though, as just five minutes later the love birds returned to the stage where they were married by Third Man Records co-founder Ben Swank, who reportedly quoted Prince‘s “Let’s Go Crazy”, saying, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.” White’s mother, Teresa Gillis, was there to witness the special moment, and the couple’s respective bassists served as the best man and maid of honor. Jack White does not allow cell phones at his concerts, so fans were unable to take photos or videos of the wedding.

In a post on social media, Jack White shared a photo of the moment he proposed with the caption, “‘Let’s get married in a big cathedral by a priest.’ 04.08.22”.

The spontaneous onstage wedding ceremony marks White’s third marriage. The first was to White Stripes drummer Meg White, which lasted from 1996 to 2000, and the second was to model Karen Elson, whom White married in 2005 before divorcing in 2013.

Jack White’s new album is now available on all streaming platforms, vinyl, and CD, and he has upcoming tour dates around the U.S., with shows in Europe and Japan in June and July, after which he will return to the states for shows in the Midwest, festival appearances at Bourbon and Beyond and Ohana Festival 2022, and more.
