Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit were back at the Ryman Auditorium on Wednesday for the fifth performance as part of the country-rock guitarist’s ongoing seven-show residency at the beloved Nashville venue. Isbell was joined in support on Wednesday by veteran blues musician, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes.
Following Holmes’ opening set, Isbell and his band took the stage of the Nashville concert hall for an 18-song performance which featured some rare selections from his extensive songbook and beyond. The show started with a mix of originals in “Hope the High Road”, “Anxiety”, and “Overseas” followed by Drive-By Truckers favorite, “Decoration Day”. Next up came a pair of tunes from Isbell’s 2017 The Nashville Sound album with “White Mans’ World” and “Last of My Kind”.
The show continued with “Codeine” and “Tour of Duty”, followed by another one of Isbell’s Drive-By Truckers tunes, “Goddamn Lonely Love”. After rocking out to “Streetlights”, “Stockholm”, “Flying Over Water”, and “If It Takes a Lifetime”, Isbell and his band delivered their first live performance of “We’ve Met” from 2011’s Here We Rest since April 2012. The set came to a close following “Cover Met Up” and “Super 8”. The band returned to the stage to close the show with a two-song encore comprised of a cover of Dire Straits‘ “Brothers in Arms” and “24 Frames”.
