Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit have shared a performance video of “Something More Than Free” from quarantine.

“Something More Than Free” joins “24 Frames” in what is proving to be a recurring series of videos shot from each member’s respective homes. This new installment, however, features Isbell’s wife, Amanda Shires, on violin. Isbell has been a regular participant in Shires’ I So Lounging daily live streams, and it appears Shires has returned the favor in this new video.

The song is the title track from Isbell and the Unit’s 2015 album, the same album they pulled “24 Frames” from last week. Once again employing a Brady Bunch-style screen configuration, the focus of “Something More Than Free” seems to be on the instrumentation, rather than Isbell’s lyrics. Given the fact that Isbell is now sharing a space, and a microphone, with Shires, his vocals are a little lower in the mix, but that only brings out the rest of the band even more. Even though Isbell made a name for himself as a solo performer following his departure from Drive-By Truckers in 2007, it is important to remember the band members that give the 400 Unit such a rich, full sound.

Isbell and the Unit are preparing for the May 15th release of Reunions, their follow-up album to 2017’s The Nashville Sound. Plus, the band is still scheduled to go out on tour beginning on May 28th with a show at Akron Civic Theatre in Ohio. Given the widespread cancellations that have plagued the live music industry, as well as the recent prediction that concerts won’t resume until fall 2021, the fate of that tour is highly uncertain. Stay tuned to Isbell’s website for any new information.
