Jay-Z‘s personal experience selling drugs on the streets of Brooklyn seems to be paying off in his legal endeavors, as the famous rapper and entrepreneur has been announced as the new Chief Brand Strategist for cannabis consumer products company Calvia.
According to the announcement shared by the Cannabis brand on Tuesday, the hip-hop mogul—whose real name is Shawn Carter—will begin a multi-year partnership with Caliva.
“[Jay-Z] will play a crucial role driving creative direction, outreach efforts and strategy for the brand,” the organization shared in a statement posted to its website. “In this position, Mr. Carter will focus on and work to increase the economic participation of citizens returning from incarceration – many of who are not seeing the monetary benefits of legalization – through advocacy, job training, and overall employee and workforce development.”
Jay-Z also shared his own statement on his latest business venture, adding, “Anything I do, I want to do correctly and at the highest level. With all the potential in the cannabis industry, Caliva’s expertise and ethos makes them the best partner for this endeavor. We want to create something amazing, have fun in the process, do good and bring people along the way.”
The announcement comes a little over a month after Forbes reported that Jay-Z has become the first rap artist in history to build a net worth surpassing $1 billion.
With his new involvement in the company, Jay-Z joins fellow artists including Umphrey’s McGee, Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Jimmy Buffett, and even the son of late Brooklyn rapper Chris “Biggie” Wallace, who have all entered America’s blossoming green industry in hopes of cashing in on the growing demand for cannabis.
