Jeff Tweedy will release a new book entitled How To Write One Song, the Wilco frontman announced on Tuesday.

The new book follows Tweedy’s 2019 bestselling memoir, Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back), which chronicled his rise to stardom and earned widespread praise. How To Write A Song is out on October 13th.

In How To Write A Song, Tweedy moves for a more instructional approach than his memoir. Throughout the book he reveals the behind-the-scenes process of how he writes music, as well as expounds on the joy that he receives from partaking in the craft. While the book is more technical than his previous release, it is also described as thoughtful and conversational as the singer-songwriter offers practical tips on overcoming self-doubt, building good creative habits, language techniques to get out of one’s comfort zone, easy recording methods, and more.

The book is appropriately titled How To Write One Song because Tweedy sees the difference of one song and many songs as an important distinction that can help simplify a confusing art form. One of the tips contained in the book is focusing on the one song as a singular event, and building it from the ground-up. Most importantly, the book teaches budding songsmiths how to enjoy the process of writing music.

“The feeling I get when I write—the sense that time is simultaneously expanding and disappearing—that I’m simultaneously more me and also free of me—is the main reason I wanted to put my thoughts on songwriting down in book form to share with everyone so inclined,” Tweedy said along with the book’s announcement.

How To Write One Song is available for pre-order here, and is out on October 13th.
