[UPDATE: 7/30/22]: Jennifer Hartswick has shared an official music video for “Only Time Will Tell”, the lead single off her upcoming album, Something in the Water, due out September 9th via Christian McBride‘s Mack Avenue Music Group imprint, Brother Mister Productions.

The song tells “the story of a woman scorned,” according to Hartswick. “All too often we stay too long because it’s familiar, not because it’s good for our soul. The temptation to stick around will always remain,” she wrote in a post accompanying the video. The song was co-written with Nick Cassarino and Erin Boyd and features Christian McBride on bass. It highlights Hartswick’s multiple talents, showcasing her virtuosic vocals and tasteful trumpet harmonies in the context of a well crafted jazz/R&B track.

The video was produced by Hannah Shroering and directed by cinematographer Dan LaDue. It stars dancers Natalie Aaron and Gian Marco Dela Cruz as a tempestuous couple alongside Hartswick herself, who struggles to find the right lyrics for a song throughout the video. The couple fights and makes up throughout the day as they engage in domestic activities. They wind up going their separate ways before ultimately reuniting at a jazz club where Hartswick performs as they dance the night away.

Jennifer Hartswick – “Only Time Will Tell”

7/8/22: Jennifer Hartswick has announced her latest album, Something in the Water, due out September 9th via Christian McBride‘s Mack Avenue Music Group imprint, Brother Mister Productions. The announcement arrives alongside a lyric video for the album’s first single, “Only Time Will Tell“.

Reprising her last studio collaboration with renowned bassist and dear friend McBride on 2018’s acclaimed Nexus, Hartswick’s latest LP is comprised of nine new tracks including selections from her original repertoire and fresh arrangements of familiar songs alongside her core ensemble and featured guests. Co-written with guitarist and album producer Nick Cassarino (The Nth Power), Something in the Water presents a tender portrait of the human condition, brimming with humor and vulnerability.

“We wanted to celebrate the human experience,” says the Nashville-based singer and trumpeter. “We wanted to write about all facets of love and life and loss and gain. There’s definitely an arc of someone’s life in this album.”

Jennifer Hartswick is well-known for her work with a range of nationally touring acts, most notably as a founding member of the Trey Anastasio Band, though she has built a separate following for her softer, solo material via her acclaimed studio releases and soulful duo performances with Cassarino.

In addition to contributions from McBride and Cassarino, Something in the Water features other longtime collaborators like Conor Elmes (drums), Celisse Henderson (vocals), and Rob Marscher (keys) as well as trombonists Natalie Cressman and Roy Agee.

Only Time Will Tell explores the story of a woman scorned,” explains Hartswick of the new single, co-written with Cassarino and Erin Boyd. “All too often we stay too long because it’s familiar, not because it’s good for our soul. The temptation to stick around will always remain.”

McBride’s singular bass tone sets the stage for the layered track before Hartswick takes listeners on a haunting tour of a love gone sideways with swelling jazz accompaniment and her famously acrobatic vocal leads.
