Though 2020 has seen plenty of odd stories from throughout the music world, sometimes a new project comes along that still has the ability to shock a beleaguered listening public. That latest development came on Christmas Eve of all days when Jenny Lewis and Bill Murray released their collaborative cover of “Laugh Now Cry Later” by Drake.

While the 68-second video posted to the former Rilo Kiley and Postal Service singer/guitarist’s Instagram is short on concrete answers of when, where, why, and how this project came about, it leaves plenty to unpack. Even though nobody asked for this, Murray’s deadpan witticism as a participant is the pinnacle mood of 2020.

Those who aren’t big fans of the Canadian rapper and former Degrassi star born Aubrey Drake Graham are in luck with this cover, as Lewis and Murray turn the club banger into a slow death march. Lewis takes the lead with her vocals and rudimentary bass line while Murray eeks out a repetitive drum phrase that is as sloppily delivered as it is simplistic. The cover of “Laugh Now Cry Later” is best considered as a piece of performance art, like the kind of shenanigans Murray is known for engaging in every day with the random people he sees on the street.
