A memorable 1991 Jerry Garcia Band run at The Warfield in San Francisco is headed for release in full as Live at The Warfield. Out July 25th via Garcia Family Provisions, the release captures every note of the Grateful Dead guitarist’s three-night run on February 28th, March 1st, and March 2nd, 1991.
The Warfield became a home away from home for Garcia, who played the venue 130 times with his solo outfit (dwarfing the Dead’s 20 shows from 1980–1983). Garcia’s dressing room was marked by a purple door with a star on it and simply the name “Jerry,” as depicted on Live at the Warfield‘s cover. Of Garcia’s 130 solo shows at The Warfield, 16 occurred in 1991 alone, and Garcia Family Provisions will release two more of them later this year.
The Live at The Warfield run features Jerry Garcia playing alongside bassist John Kahn, keyboardist Melvin Seals, drummer David Kemper, and vocalists Jacklyn LaBranch and Gloria Jones. Together, they turned in a run of shows considered by many fans to be among the band’s best of the decade. Each night has its own unique charm, starting with the opening “The Way You Do the Things You Do” which is available now as the lead single. On night two, JGB delivered double doses of Van Morrison (“He Ain’t Give You None” and “And It Stoned Me”) and Bob Dylan (“Forever Young” and “Positively 4th Street”), plus a wild 20-minute “Don’t Let Go”. For the finale, Garcia runs the gamut of emotions by way of Dylan tributes with a moving “I Shall Be Released”, an ominous”Señor”, and joyous “Tangled Up in Blue” to wrap up the whole run.
Live at The Warfield will arrive on 6CD and digital platforms, plus individual vinyl releases for each night or the full 13LP bundle with each show.
