Jimi Hendrix debuted his Band of Gypsys, featuring Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums, back on New Year’s Eve of 1969. The group played two shows on Dec. 31st and another two shows again on Jan. 1st at iconic New York City venue the Fillmore East.

The first of those four legendary shows just received a proper release on Sept. 30th via Sony/Legacy, and is titled Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69. The show features an 11-song setlist, with a debut of the track “Ezy Rider” (take a listen below), courtesy of WSJ’s Speakeasy blog.

Producer John McDermott discussed the days leading up to the new trio’s first shows, “The band did rehearse, spending days at Baggies Rehearsal Studios in New York City….Nothing fancy, just a place for the group to work out the repertoire that Jimi wanted to premiere at the Fillmore East shows.” Purchase the album here.
