At a Vanity Fair Summit held in San Francisco, singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett emerged from the audience to ask Spotify CEO Daniel Ek an interesting question: “When can we get a raise?”

Buffett, who is perhaps best known for his songs “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” said he’s making less money from streaming services than he used to from other sources of royalties. Buffett has been in the music business for nearly fifty years.

Ek quickly cited the fact that Spotify paid artists $1 billion to the music industry last year, though that answer is particularly vague, as there are a number of middlemen between Spotify and the artists.

It seems that the internet is a double-edged sword for artists, as it allows for increased exposure but results in decreased profit margins. For now, Mr. Buffett, it looks like you won’t be getting that raise.
