Hozier, Tom Morello, Emmylou Harris, and many more will take part in a star-studded tribute celebrating the life and legacy of folk icon Joan Baez. Set for February 8th at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, the benefit concert will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

The stacked lineup includes Baez herself, who retired from touring in 2019, as well as Rosanne Cash, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Henry, Lucinda Williams, Taj Mahal, Margo Price, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot. The performers will be backed by a house band comprised of Joe Henry, Jason Crosby, Greg Leisz, Gabe Harris, and David Piltch. Tickets for the event will go on sale this Friday, December 20th.

As a leading figure of the American folk music revival in the 1960s, Joan Baez helped popularize politically charged acoustic music alongside Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and others. She released more than 30 albums before announcing her final tour in 2018 and since then has turned her focus to painting while continuing to perform at special events. She recently played with Hozier, Mavis Staples, and more at Newport Folk Festival, collaborated with Maggie Rogers at a benefit for Tibet House, and jammed with Bob Weir and Sammy Hagar at their Acoustic-4-A-Cure Benefit. She also joined Bob Weir for a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace” at a memorial service for Ram Dass back in 2020.

Baez is portrayed in the new Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown by Monica Barbaro, who told Rolling Stone, “Her life is so much more significant than just the part it played in Bob’s life,” adding, “She deserves her own biopic, limited series, whatever.”
