On Saturday Night, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to Port Chester, NY’s Capitol Theatre for their second of three sold-out performances. Following a rowdy opening night on Friday, which featured rarities, a Motörhead cover, and a special guest appearance from guitarist Tyrone Cotton, JRAD was back and ready to rock at one of the country’s most treasured rock and roll palaces.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead opened their first set with “Stagger Lee”, with Tom Hamilton leading the way on vocals. “Stagger Lee” led way into “My Brother Esau”, played for the first time by the five-piece since March 17th, 2017. The quintet picked up the pace as the moved forward with “The Race Is On”, before delivering a heavy-hitting one-two combo with “Help On The Way” into “Slipknot!”. The traditional placement of “Franklin’s Tower” did not follow “Slipknot!”, as the band instead changed gears into “Mama Tried”. Hamilton and Scott Metzger spit some firey-hot guitar solos back and forth, anchored by Joe Russo and Dave Dreiwitz’s tight-knit rhythmic pocket. A heartfelt rendition of “Stella Blue” followed “Mama Tried”, before the five-piece unit brought the first set to a close with “Brown-Eyed Women”.

Following a brief setbreak, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to the stage to open up their second set with “Blues For Allah”, with guest guitarist Jonathan Goldberger on hand. Last night’s “Blues For Allah” marked only the second time Joe Russo’s Almost Dead has worked through the early Grateful Dead number, last played by the five-piece on October 8th, 2016. With Goldberger remaining on stage, the six-piece moved into “St. Stephen”, highlighted by the three guitar gods ripping through mind-bending solos. The noteworthy take on “St. Stephen” led way to “Truckin'”, with Joe Russo anchoring the unstoppable powerhouse. A cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” was next, before bringing the second set to a close with “Casey Jones” followed by an appropriately placed “One More Saturday Night”.

JRAD decided to have some fun for the encore, as Red Baraat worked their way through the crowd from the back of the venue, eventually reaching the stage, and helping the band along with Goldberger deliver a hard-hitting encore with “Not Fade Away”.

The band will look to pick up where they left off tonight, with their third and final scheduled show of the weekend at The Capitol Theatre. Sunday night’s show is of course sold out, but fans can still tune into the show via the live webcast.
