Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Announces Webcasts For Texas Run

The band—comprised of drummer Joe Russo, keyboardist Marco Benevento, guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger, and bassist Dave Dreiwitz—opened up their first set with a debut, “Might As Well”, which was also played in the opening slot of the first set when the Grateful Dead debuted the tune in 1976. JRAD smoothly segued out of “Might As Well” into “Playing In The Band”, which was followed up by “Althea”. The quintet moved forward with a tease-filled “Greatest Story Ever Told” featuring licks of “Playin'” and “Tennessee Jed”. Following a tender take on “Row Jimmy”, JRAD brought the first set to a close with an explosive “King Solomon’s Marbles”.

Following a brief set break, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to open their second set with a sandwiched “Loser” in between an exploratory improvisational jam. Moving out of the second segment of the jam, the five-piece dove into “The Eleven”, highlighted by some firey interplay between Hamilton and Metzger. “The Eleven” coasted into “Viola Lee Blues”, which allowed Dreiwitz to dazzle the crowd with a solo that included a tease of James Whitcomb Riley‘s “Shortnin’ Bread”. JRAD smoothly segued out of “Viola” into “Franklin’s Tower” before Benevento showered the crowd with a tease of the Allman Brothers Band‘s “Jessica” and a soaring solo. The quintet moved forward with “Truckin'” and a “Born Cross Eyed” jam before closing out the superb set with “U.S. Blues”. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to deliver a lone encore of “New Minglewood Blues”.
