Joe Russo’s Almost Dead was back in action on Thursday with the first of two shows at The Met Philly in Philadelphia, PA. The band’s return to Philly (the hometown of guitarist Tom Hamilton) for the two-night run featured a mix of classic rock covers from The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and more, in addition to the surprise use of confetti cannons later on in the show.

JRAD opened the first half of Thursday’s show with a pair of mid-70s Grateful Dead classics starting with “Let It Grow” followed by “Crazy Fingers”. “Till the Morning Comes” from 1970’s American Beauty came next, followed by the Scott Metzger-sung “My Brother Esau”. The band sent fans into set break following a performance of “Here Comes Sunshine”.

The band returned to the stage to open the second half of the show with a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City”, a fitting move considering the venue’s close proximity to New Jersey right across the river. The set continued with the classic “Lost Sailor” into “Saint of Circumstance” combination, followed by “Tennessee Jed”. Another popular rock cover followed, this time being that of The Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time”, followed by another well-known Dead multi-song combination in “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” to close the set. Never really ones to embrace non-musical theatrics, fans in attendance on Thursday were surprised to experience a wall of confetti canons which went off right as the band transitioned into “Franklin’s Tower” for an extra fun ending to the show. Following “Franklin’s”, The band returned for a one-song encore covering Bob Dylan‘s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”.
