Joe Russo’s Almost Dead made one last trip to Westville Music Bowl on Sunday to close out a three-night run at the New Haven, CT venue with a Father’s Day show. Sunday’s concert saw Joe Russo’s Almost Dead assisted throughout the show by a horn section to jazz things up as they dispersed covers of The Band throughout the traditional Grateful Dead programming.

With a strict 9 p.m. curfew in effect for the venue, Sunday’s show began bright and early at 5:30 with an opening “Aiko Aiko”. JRAD wasted no time with segues through a standalone “China Cat Sunflower” into the first cover of The Band of the evening with “Ophelia”. It was then time for a deep dive with Ronald “Pigpen” McKernan‘s “Operator” ahead of a detour into The Fab Four’s catalog with The Beatles‘ “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?” before “Hard To Handle” closed out the first frame.

Returning for set two, JRAD opted for the spirited “Alabama Getaway” before plunging into the depths of an eerie “Feel Like A Stranger”. Continuing on through “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo”, the band kept things light with “Good Lovin'” and Chuck Berry‘s “Let It Rock” before 1965 R&B hit “(I’m A) Roadrunner”, as made famous by Junior Walker & The Allstars. Another selection from The Band came next with “Rage Mama Rag” before a combination of “Cats Under The Stars” and “C.C. Rider” closed out the second set. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, and by result the audience, still hadn’t had enough from The Band, however, as the show—and the weekend run—closed out with Tom Hamilton doing his best Levon Helm on a fittingly-cathartic “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”.
