John Mayer brought his ongoing summer solo tour to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI on Friday night. The guitarist treated his midwestern fans to a mix of originals from his solo catalog, in addition to debuting another Grateful Dead fan favorite on his tour in tribute to what would have been Jerry Garcia‘s 77th birthday the day prior on August 1st.

The show’s two-set performance opened with “Love On The Weekend”, the relatively new soft-rock tune from Mayer’s 2017 The Search For Everything LP. The first half of the show continued with “Vultures” and “Who Says” before Mayer returned to his familiar style of the blues for “Something Like Olivia”. “Clarity” and “Changing” came next before Mayer again turned back the pop radio clocks for a performance of “No Such Thing”, one of the hits from his 2001 debut Room For Squares. Mayer sent fans into set break following performances of “Speak For Me”, “Helpless”, and the uptempo “Still Feel Like Your Man”.

The second half of the show saw Mayer return to the stage for a trio of acoustic tunes beginning with his cover of Beyoncé‘s “XO”, followed by a pair of fan-favorite throwbacks in “Neon” and “Your Body Is A  Wonderland”. The rest of the band returned to join in on “Belief” before turning to “Moving On and Getting Over” and “Edge of Desire”. Following “Rosie” and “In The Blood”, Mayer turned his sights to Prince‘s songbook for a cover of “The Beautiful Ones” before returning back to his own catalog for the romance-driven ballad, “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”. Another cover came next with the band’s rendition of Pete Townshend‘s “Let Me Love Open the Door”, followed by “The Age of Worry”, “Waiting on the World to Change”, and “Gravity” to bring the set to a close.

Mayer and the band returned for a two-song encore which started with an emotional cover of the Dead’s famous folk song, “Friend of the Devil”. The fitting birthday tribute was only heightened by images of Jerry Garcia shown on the screen behind the band as they played along to the American Beauty classic. Mayer’s slower-tempo rendition of the folk song stretched out to a seven-minute performance, which climaxed with a solo portion worthy of a birthday tribute to Garcia. The show would finally come to a close with the performance of “New Light”.
