On Saturday, August 1st, what would have been Garcia’s 78th birthday, John Mayer will serve as the guest DJ for a Garcia birthday special on the satellite channel. As Relix notes, Mayer will be “hand picking his nine favorite, live Grateful Dead tracks and giving exclusive commentary. Listeners will hear songs including ‘China Cat Sunflower’ and ‘Jack Straw,’ as well as the specific version of the song ‘Althea’ that turned Mayer on to the Grateful Dead and inspired him to play their songs on his guitar.” Following the initial broadcast, the Mayer-hosted Jerry Garcia birthday special will be rebroadcast at various times throughout the Days Between. In addition to the guest-hosted specials the SiriusXM Grateful Dead Channel, the Days Between programming will feature full performances from through the years including a number of Jerry Garcia Band concerts from the ’70s, ’80s, and early ’90s, Garcia performances alongside frequent collaborators John Kahn and Merl Saunders, and Warren Haynes’ symphonic tribute to Garcia’s music from August 1st, 2016 at Red Rocks.
