John Mayer shared an update from the studio on Monday in which he announced that he is working on new music. The news comes after Dead & Company recently announced that summer 2023 will be the group’s final tour.

“I know it’s been a while since I’ve updated you on what’s next, and since many of you have asked when the next leg of touring is, I thought I’d share my thoughts and intentions for the future,” Mayer wrote in a post shared to social media. “I love touring and will continue to play live shows, but in staying open to what’s driving me creatively, it felt like making more music was the most inspired feeling I had.”

Mayer went on to say that he “will make it to other cities and countries in the future” while expressing urgency about his need to record new material while the inspiration is flowing. “I’ve just got more songs to make,” he said. “I’m having the time of my life writing and recording, and it won’t be long before I share some very exciting news about some new projects.”

He concluded the update with a message of gratitude to fans, saying, “I’m grateful beyond description for all the love and support I’ve got in you all,” calling himself “the luckiest person in the world to still be on this big beautiful ride with you all.”

Mayer’s most recent album, Sob Rock, was released in July 2021. “I don’t really make records unless I’ve caught a new mission statement for what the music should be, what the message should be,” he told Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe at the time. “The reason my records are all different, sort of, thematically, is I just have to wait until I catch a new script idea.”

Mayer toured the U.S. in support of Sob Rock earlier this year, though the run was often marked by COVID-related pivots and postponements.
