John Mayer has rescheduled four shows on his Sob Rock tour after testing positive for COVID-19. The singer-songwriter has moved dates in Pittsburgh, New York, and Massachusetts to May.
“Whelp. More members of the band tested positive for Covid today, and I was one of them,” the guitarist wrote on Facebook.
Mayer will now perform at Pittsburgh, PA’s PPG Paints Arena on May 5th; Belmont Park, NY’s UBS Arena on the 7th; and stage two nights at Boston, MA’s TD Garden on the 9th and 10th. Mayer is scheduled to return to the road on March 11th at The Garden Grand Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
This comes as the latest hurdle for Mayer’s nostalgia-driven Sob Rock tour. After kicking off the tour on February 17th in Albany, Mayer hit a snag ahead of his second night at Madison Square Garden in New York City on the 21st. Prior to the show, he informed audiences that drummer Steve Ferrone and vocalist Carlos Ricketts both tested positive for COVID. The show went on, however, highlighted by a surprise sit-in from The Roots drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.
This all came after a rocky start to Mayer’s 2022 year when he was forced to bow out of Dead & Company‘s Playing In The Sand destination event. After revealing a positive COVID test, Tom Hamilton (Joe Russo’s Almost Dead) was tapped to fill in alongside Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Jeff Chimenti, and Oteil Burbridge (Bill Kreutzmann was to sit out the shows per doctors orders). Both weekends of the latter-era Grateful Dead incarnation’s Cancún festival were ultimately canceled out of an abundance of caution.
Mayer addressed his two positive COVID tests within two months in his Facebook update.
“This is a bummer for everyone in the band and crew, to say nothing of the question hanging over everyone’s head – mine included – as to how I tested positive on PCR twice in two months. (The first was extremely mild, but this one’s got the better of me.) ”
