After kicking off his surprisingly intimate solo acoustic arena tour with shows in Newark and Boston, modern-day troubadour John Mayer brought his six-string to the Big Apple, arriving at The Ed Sullivan Theater a day ahead of his concert at the world-famous Madison Square Garden for a performance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Mayer played his song “Waitin’ On The Day”, from his 2013 album Paradise Valley, with just an acoustic guitar. The Dead & Company frontman performed similarly stripped-down renditions of the song at the first two shows of the tour, which is the 45-year-old rock star’s first extended solo acoustic outing.

“There’s no tour in my entire life I’ve thought about more than this one,” Mayer told the audience at the tour opener at Newark’s Prudential Center.

In addition to solo performances on acoustic guitar, piano, and the rarely seen double-neck acoustic guitar, the shows have featured deeply personal, introspective commentary from Mayer, who seems to be using the solo format to open up on stage like never before.

Mayer’s solo acoustic tour continues tonight, Wednesday, March 15th at New York’s Madison Square Garden. For more on the tour, click here, and for tickets, visit Mayer’s website.
