Contemporary jazz torch-bearer Kamasi Washington has released the third single from his upcoming double album, titled Heaven And Earth, slated for release on Friday, June 22nd. The album will mark Washington’s first release since his 2017 audiovisual concept EP Harmony of Difference and his first full-length effort since his sprawling 2015 effort, The Epic. Following the releases of “The Space Travelers Lullaby” and “Fists of Fury”, Kamasi has released “Street Fighter Mas” just a few weeks ahead of the new record’s release.

In a Twitter post, Kamasi writes that the song was inspired by the 1987 arcade game Street Fighter, and that it was written to be the game’s imagined theme song. “I still imagine it playing when I walk into a tournament, like I’m entering a boxing ring,” he writes. Check out the twitter post, along with a 1-minute teaser video of the song below.

As previously reported, Washington is also collaborating with Herbie Hancock on the jazz great’s forthcoming record, produced by Terrace Martin, which will also feature appearances by Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, and Common.
