Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Ivan Neville, DJ Logic & More Lead Jam Cruise Post-Party [Videos]

Monday marked Jam Cruise 16’s jubilant return to the Port of Miami and, along with it, The Post Cruise Party featuring Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe with special guests Ivan Neville, DJ Logic and Mike Dillon at Revolution Live in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With many Jam Cruisers resting and rehabbing or making their way home from their 5-day musical adventure on the high seas, South Floridians were treated with a taste of what it’s like to experience the music of Jam Cruise–on dry land. DJ Logic spun retro hip-hop classics for the first hour of the night and got the crowd primed for what would prove to be an all-star evening in the true spirit of Jam Cruise.

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe took the stage accompanied by DJ Logic and percussionist Mike Dillon and opened with The Allmans Brothers’ “Stand Back”, a call-back to his recent “Eat A Bunch of Peaches” Allmans-themed project, before moving into the energetic, saxophone-driven “Grunt > Mighty Mouse”. The band then progressed into Steely Dan’s “Show Biz Kids” which really got the crowd moving.

Ivan Neville made his way to the stage and provided vocals on “Gossip” and the 1969 classic “Let A Woman Be A Woman – And A Man Be A Man”. A stirring rendition of the KDTU original “Flute Down” from Dance Lesson #2 was next up, with DJ Logic providing dynamic background turntable effects.

Special guest Shira Elias, vocalist from Turkuaz, accompanied Ivan on The Pointer Sisters’ 1974 sing-along “Yes We Can”. Ivan then sung lead on Junior Walker & The All Stars’ sexy 1969 Motown hit, “What Does It Take” leaving the band to groove into ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid”.

The band finally closed their set with Ivan & Shira providing vocal support on “So Real”, before encoring with an all-out “Boogaloo” dance party featuring Mike Dillon and DJ Logic trading drum and turntable licks.
