After two weeks of build-up, Compton hip-hop heavyweight Kendrick Lamar revealed today that his new album will be released in one week, on Friday, April 14th. The buzz around Kendrick’s latest release (his third proper album and fourth studio release, including his 2016 To Pimp A Butterfly outtake project untitled unmastered), began on March 24th, when the rapper cleared his Instagram account and posted a somewhat cryptic “IV”. Lamar followed that up with the release of a brand new song, “The Heart Part 4.” The new track came nearly five years after he and his Black Hippy cohorts Ab-Soul and Jay Rock recorded “The Heart Part 3” in Las Vegas, three days before the release of his groundbreaking second album and major label debut good kid M.A.A.D. city. In a subtle hint within the song, Lamar warned that fans have “until April the 7th to get y’all shit together,” prompting speculation that the new album would be released on that day.

Well, today is the day–April the 7th–and alas, no new Kendrick Lamar album. However, the mysterious date will not pass without big news on the record, as a pre-order link has appeared on iTunes for a new K Dot LP. The release is currently labeled simply as “ALBUM,” and none of the track names are listed, but a pre-order of the album reveals each song’s writing credits. While the credits do not match those circulated as a “leaked track list” last week, the real list is no less intriguing: Credited collaborators include 9th WonderJames BlakeBadBadNotGoodThe AlchemistMike WiLL Made It and, most surprisingly, Irish mega-band U2. While it is unclear if each of these listed collaborators actually worked with Kendrick or were simply sampled for the album, the list certainly piques our interest.
