Texas originals Khruangbin and Leon Bridges returned on Friday with another collaborative EP, Texas Moon. This five-song collection comes two years following their debut group effort, Texas Sun.

As the title may indicate, Texas Moon serves as a companion piece to the original EP. In a statement, Fort Worth native Bridges called the release “more introspective” while bassist Laura Lee of the Houston-based trio said it “feels more nighttime.” The EP’s opening track “Doris” immediately embodies that nighttime aesthetic with a dreary, loping beat and Bridges’ lullaby delivery.

B-Side“, the debut single that announced Texas Moon, is much more distinctly Khruangbin. A slick disco riff from guitarist Mark Speer intermingles with Leon’s understated backroom elegance. The remainder of the EP hears the creative center toggle back and forth as Bridges takes center stage with “Chocolate Hills“, his trademark crooning acting as a musical focal point. Texas Moon ends serenely with “Mariella” as dawn begins to break over the horizon.

“It feels really special to me,” Lee said of the collaboration. “It’s not Khruangbin, it’s not Leon, it’s this world we created together.”

“As far as an essentially instrumental band, these guys are kind of the top for me,” Bridges added. “I’m honored to have been the first singer that they’ve incorporated in their music.”

Since last joining forces on Texas Sun, Khruangbin and Bridges have both shown lingering effects of the initial collaboration. On Khruangbin’s 2020 LP Mordechai the formerly instrumental trio began incorporating lyrics into its innovative brand of world music. Meanwhile, Bridges developed a taste for collaboration as he would release tracks alongside John Mayer, Lucky Daye, and Jazmine Sullivan.
