Australian psych rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard returned to The Caverns in Pelham, TN last night for the second of four shows at the subterranean venue.

After kicking off the run on Thursday with a set that featured the live debut of “Supercell” off the band’s forthcoming “heavy as f–k” album PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation, KGLW dove right in on Friday, opening the show with the first half of 2014’s I’m in Your Mind Fuzz, “I’m in Your Mind” > “I’m Not in Your Mind” > “Cellophane” > “I’m in Your Mind Fuzz”.

The Gizz then ventured into the realm of heavy, driving rock with “Planet B” and kept the momentum going with “Predator X” and “Converge”, another PetroDragonic Apocalypse track which the band debuted last week at Boston Calling. “This Thing” provided a moment of respite with its dreamy, ethereal vibes before the set took an unexpected turn with “Magenta Mountain”, seamlessly transitioning into “The Grim Reaper” with a tantalizing tease of “Sadie Sorceress”.

The live debut of “Astroturf”, off 2022’s Changes, was met with sheer excitement from the crowd, followed by “The Garden Goblin”, with its swirling melodies and otherworldly imagery.

The infectious, Afrobeat-inspired groove of “Ice V” had the crowd moving, their bodies pulsating with the rhythm until “Doom City” unleashed a torrent of rock ‘n’ roll fury as the band’s relentless energy reached its peak. The crowd was swept up in the band’s sonic onslaught as the transition into “Automation” showcased their ability to seamlessly shift gears, blending elements of psychedelic rock, metal, and experimental music into a surprisingly cohesive set.

“Billabong Valley” provided a moment of nostalgic bliss, as the band delved into their signature blend of catchy melodies and infectious hooks before closing the show with the heavy psych/sludge metal mantra of “K.G.L.W.” from 2021’s L.W.
