The members of Australian hard-rock band King Gizzard & The Lizard are spending their time during the concert industry shutdown doing exactly what fans would have guessed: planning to release yet another album project. This time, the band will release a concert film and an accompanying live album to be titled, Chunky Shrapnel.
Announced on Thursday, the feature-length Chunky Shrapnel will highlight a mix of the band’s performances from their throughout their 2019 European tour. The concert film/documentary will feature pro-shot performances of 16 songs played during the tour in cities ranging from London to Madrid and will premiere on Friday, April 17th via a ticketed online live-stream.
The Chunky Shrapnel live album will arrive on all digital platforms on April 24th, to be followed by a physical release a month later on May 29th. The film’s accompanying double LP will be available for pre-order next Friday, April 10th.
Members of the band will also take part in a Reddit AMA to engage with their global fanbase ahead of the film’s premiere on April 17th at 12 p.m. PST. More details on that event will be shared in the coming weeks.
“[Director] John Stewart followed us around for a few weeks through Europe,” King Gizzard guitarist/singer Stu Mackenzie said in a statement of their forthcoming project. “It was fun and funny and wild and weird. Sometimes an inconspicuous fly on the wall, sometimes an intrusive cameraman one inch from my face. Always exciting though. Chunky Shrapnel was made for the cinema but as both concerts and films are currently outlawed, it feels poetic to release a concert-film digitally right now.”

Additionally, the band also made a point to announce the rescheduled concert dates for their previously-announced 2020 North American spring tour, and the trio of “Marathon Shows” At Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre (sold-out) and California’s Greek Theatre, which will now take place in the fall.
