It was anything but a normal day at the office back in March when King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard stopped by Highway Holidays headquarters for a performance. The Australian psych-rock juggernauts took the Omnium Gatherum track “Gaia” for an extended spin at the offices of the global touring logistics company.

The first few minutes of chugging power chords ultimately give way to a “Moby Dick”-esque breakdown from drummer Michael Cavanagh. The live cut’s ten-minute runtime—which dwarfs the five-minute studio version—takes most of its length from Cavanagh’s drum solo. Before long, however, Stu Mackenzie and Joey Walker‘s guitars hunger for more riffs, and their growling intensity builds the song back up. Their snarls are ultimately drowned out by the roar of Cavs’ drums that continue to escalate in intensity until, finally satiated, they take a moment’s rest before Stu returns to break the silence by bellowing “I am Gaia!”

Given this extended rendition, it’s no wonder that “Gaia” came from what Mackenzie deemed the beginning of the band’s “jammy period.” Omnium Gatherum was merely one leg of a marathon year of studio releases for the prolific King Gizzard, with the band adding five new albums to its extensive discography in eight months.

Following an unusually long studio silence (long for King Gizzard, anyway), the band returned earlier this month with news of a new album, PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation. The double LP will hear the band return to the thrash metal concept first explored on their 2019 album, Infest the Rats’ Nest. The lead single, “Gilla Monster“, is out now. PetroDragonic Apocalypse drops June 16th via KGLW and is available here for pre-order.

Watch King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard jam out “Gaia” for Highway Holidays. Following a set at Boston Calling this weekend, the band will embark on a “residency tour” of the U.S., with extended stays in Tennessee, Colorado, Illinois, and Washington. Tickets and a full list of tour dates are available on their website.
