Last night, the Kitchen Dwellers began their Colorado marathon of shows (five shows in four nights) at The Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado, with Tenth Mountain Division and Kind Hearted Strangers. Playing to a packed house of folks ready to get down to some bluegrass and plenty of jams, all the bands on the bill came out swinging, for what was one hell of a Wednesday night throwdown.

Kind Hearted Strangers put on a spirited opening set that got the crowd warmed up nice and early, proving they are a young local band to keep an eye on in the near future. Tenth Mountain Division offered a clinic of bluegrass mixed with plenty of jam and dance-driven grooves. The band also brought out fellow Boulderites The Sweet Lillies for a couple of covers, including The Doobie Brothers’ 1976 classic “Takin’ It To The Streets,” with all on-stage grooving along in a unified dance routine.

With last night’s show, Bozeman’s own Kitchen Dwellers showed that they are finding their stride and ready to take things to the next level. Coming out of the gates with “Visions of More” (a track the group recorded for Ghost In The Bottle with Mihali Savoulidis of Twiddle), from the start of the performance onward, the group never let up. The quartet of Torrin Daniels (banjo), Joe Funk (bass), Shawn Swain (mandolin), and Max Davies (guitar) have an undeniable synergy on stage, quickly dialing into the crowd and creating a frenzy of moving feet on the floor.
“Muir Maid”, a new song that the Dwellers have been playing on the road, came ahead of a rockin’ romp through “Big Mon > Buckle Down > No Excuses”, with Alice In Chains’s 1994 Jar of Flies track serving as a pleasant surprise for some of the grunge heads in attendance. Leaving little room for breathing, the quartet jumped into another non-stop section of songs which featured a rousing cover of the Old 97’s “Timebomb”.
After putting their own galaxy-grass spin on the Grateful Dead‘s “New Speedway Boogie”, the long set came to a close, with the band performing “Nothin’ But Nothin'” (a Yonder Mountain String Band cover) for the encore, as the crowd dispersed into the streets of Boulder. The Kitchen Dwellers’ Colorado run continues on Thursday at Belly Up Aspen, followed by a 4/20 performance at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins and two performances on Saturday in Denver at 420 On The Block and during an official 420 On The Block afterparty at Globe Hall.
