German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk are scheduled to play Buenos Aires, Argentina later this month. That performance is now likely to be canceled, or at the very least postponed, due to the city’s recent ban of all electronic music events and any artist that “uses synthesizers or samplers as their primary instrument.”

The ban was instated after the deaths of five attendees from drug overdoses at this past April’s Time Warp Argentina event. The city’s mayor, Horatio Rodriguez Larreta pushed for the ban after the unfortunate events following Time Warp, and has stated that there will be no lifting of the measure until steps have been taken by local officials and authorities to combat drug abuse.

Promoters of the show, Move Concerts, have said that over 70% of tickets for the Kraftwerk show have already been sold. In response to the potential cancellation, they went on to say, “They use synthesizers, but what we’re proposing is a different format….It’s a concert that’s open to the public and runs between an hour-and-a-half and two hours. There will also be no alcoholic drinks served.”

An appeal has been made by the promoters to allow the concert to move forward at this time, but no response has come just yet. In related news, Sónar Buenos Aires Festival has not encountered similar issues, and is still scheduled to happen.
