While plenty of bands are known to dress up for Halloween, one group that goes all out for All Hallows Eve is Lake Street Dive. The indie neo-soul outfit has made an annual tradition of its viral Halloween covers of bands like The Beatles, QueenThe Traveling Wilburys, and more. Lake Street Dive continued the tradition this year by honoring the 1993 pop hit “The Sign” by Ace of Base.

Lake Street Dive takes “The Sign” into the studio for a dutiful homage to the music video that was a staple of early ’90s MTV. As always, the group’s stunning harmonies are the focal point, as well as keyboardist Akie Bermiss‘ synthesizers and irresistibly jovial background dancing. The band did encounter one problem with the cover, however, as Lake Street Dive explains in the video description.

“HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! When it occurred to us to be Ace of Base for Halloween this year there was a collective sense of ‘DUH! How have we not already done that?!’ This song is a total jam and 90s fashion is SO FUN,” Lake Street Dive wrote. “The only problem to solve was what to do with our fifth band member since there are only four members in Ace of Base. Mike had the ingenious idea that he would dress up as the titular “Sign” and he went to the craft store and handmade his costume. BEST COSTUME AWARD GOES TO MIKE.

“Thanks to our amazing crew for helping us get this together! Halloween is the best holiday, why does it only happen once a year?!!”

Beyond Halloween, the members of Lake Street Dive are no strangers to covers. The band first found viral fame over a decade ago with a street corner take on The Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back“. The group went on to release a collection of covers, Fun Machine, in 2012, and ten years later revisited the concept with Fun Machine: The Sequel. Just a few months ago, LSD also teamed up with Monica Martin for a stunning cover of the Elvis Presley classic “Can’t Help Falling In Love“.
