Leftover Salmon opened a two-night run of intimate shows at Nashville’s Station Inn on Tuesday with a performance besieged by special guests including Billy Strings, Lindsay Lou, Kyle Tuttle, and Anders Beck (Greensky Bluegrass). The performance helped celebrate Salmon multi-instrumentalist Drew Emmitt‘s birthday.

Tickets to Tuesday’s show were made available that same day, at the door only. Less than 200 lucky fans filed into the seated venue where they were treated to an eventful evening of music, as frontman Vince Herman invited up a cavalcade of visitors from his adopted hometown of Music City.

The jamgrass stalwarts had shown their hands earlier in the day with a clip of Billy jamming with them at Compass Records. Sure enough, when showtime rolled around, Strings sauntered in to join Leftover Salmon on originals “Down In The Hollow”, “Troubled Times”, and an expansive “Aquatic Hitchhiker” that allowed Billy to show off his improvisational prowess alongside the old guard. The extended ensemble also paid tribute to the bluegrass greats with Bill Monroe‘s “I’m Blue, I’m Lonesome Too” and Ralph Stanley‘s “If I Lose”, with Billy leading the pack through the traditional mountain tunes.

For their part, Lou and Tuttle joined in on a cover of Jimmy Martin‘s “What Watcha Got” as Linsday took on lead vocals. The duo also contributed to Lucinda Williams‘ “Lines Around Your Face”, with Lou imbuing the raw power of the towering singer-songwriter as Tuttle added potent banjo licks. Tuesday’s show also featured a dueling dobro segment as Anders Beck squared off against Leftover Salmon’s newly-minted member Jay Starling on “Breakin’ Thru”.
