Vince Herman is still breaking new ground over 30 years into his career as the Leftover Salmon frontman on Wednesday announced details of his first-ever solo album, Enjoy the Ride. Out on November 18th via LoHi Records, the country album hears the jamgrass pioneer working with famed producer David Ferguson (Johnny Cash, Sturgill Simpson, John Prine).
A product of the pandemic, the seed of Enjoy the Ride was planted when Herman loaded into his RV and hit the road in 2020. He left his home in Boulder, CO and bounced around until he landed in Nashville, where he now calls home.
“During the pandemic, I got an RV and just decided to have my own bubble and drive around the country,” Herman explained. Of his five months spent on the road, one and a half were in Nashville.
The indelible musical DNA of his new home seeped deep into Herman’s songwriting, as his old friends Donnie and Chris Davisson (Davisson Brothers Band) introduced Vince to his new manager and publisher Erv Woosley, best known as George Strait‘s manager. The Davissons also joined Herman in the songwriting sessions and before long he had “a big pile of songs”, ultimately widdled down to the 12 found on Enjoy the Ride.
“So I decided to make a record with all these songs I’ve been writing,” Herman said. “The Davissons had worked with [producer David Ferguson] on their upcoming new record, and I met Ferg, and we got along great.”
Most of Enjoy the Ride was recorded over a marathon three days at The Cowboy Arms Hotel And Recording Spa in Nashville in December 2021. Herman’s band included guitarist Pat McLaughlin, multi-instrumentalist Darrell Scott, bassist Dave Roe, drummer Pete Abbott, keyboardist Mike Rojas, guitarist and pedal steel player Russ Pahl, and fiddlers Jason Carter and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, in addition to Vince’s son Silas Herman on mandolin.
“Enjoy the Ride represents what country music is to me,” noted Vince. “Rooted in tradition but wide open and ready for a good ride.”
