The funk outfit Lettuce has shared a new music video for “Checker Wrecker”, the lead single off the Grammy-nominated act’s new Resonate LP, which is due out on May 8th via Round Hill Records.
The video for “Checker Wrecker” compiles both live and in-studio footage of the band along with Washington, D.C. go-go music legends Big Tony Fisher (Trouble Funk) and Tyrone “Jungle Boogie” Williams (Rare Essence). Go-go music, which originated in the D.C. area and was recently named the official music of the district, bridges the gap between funk and hip-hop by blending the former with rhythm and blues and soul music. The go-go influences are clear from the beginning of the video, as it opens with Big Tony in the studio, calling out, “Add a little bit of that trouble funk with some Lettuce, baby!” before announcing, “Big Tony’s in the house!” The rhythm section has a pop and groove reminiscent of old-school hip hop, with soulful vocals and funky horn phrases filling out the mix. The video also features footage of a backstage hang during which the band members cut into a cake celebrating the Grammy nomination for their 2019 album, Elevate.
In a press release, drummer Adam Deitch notes, “We all grew up bumpin late 80s hip-hop and didn’t realize until later that we were listening to samples of go-go bands like Trouble Funk and Rare Essence.” He continued, “To get Big Tony Fisher and Tyrone ‘Jungle Boogie’ Williams in the video is epic for us. They are the originators of the go-go sound and the vibe they bring is electric! This particular show in DC was absolutely wild and the crowd was on fire! We are so happy to have captured this experience in one video!”
