Linkin Park emerged from a seven-year absence earlier this year with the announcement that vocalist Emily Armstrong would take the place of Chester Bennington, who died by suicide in 2017. The personnel change was quickly met with criticism over Armstrong’s connection to the Church of Scientology and convicted rapist Danny Masterson (That ’70s Show), whose trial she attended in 2020. The Mars Volta vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala—whose wife claimed that Masterson had sexually assaulted her—was one of the first to speak out, condemning Linkin Park for “not doing their due diligence before hiring her”. His calls were echoed by Bennington’s son, who said the band “betrayed the trust” of the fanbase. In an Instagram story, Armstrong responded by stating she had not contacted Masterson since the 2020 appearance and condemned his crimes.
