LivePhish has announced that the next archival Phish release will come in the form of the band’s 8/17/93 show at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, KS. Full-show, soundboard-quality audio will be available to LivePhish subscribers beginning on Friday.

The first LivePhish release of 2021 takes fans back to the tail end of Phish’s 1993 summer tour. This concert came just three days before the band’s debut at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and the anticipation is palpable here as they are firing on all cylinders.

This classic 1993 concert finds the band opting for head-on attacks of improvisation, rather than the plethora of extended jams that would come later on in the decade. Instead, we have machine-gun Trey Anastasio hammering out breakneck guitar phrases as the show begins with a roaring “Wilson” into an energized “Llama”. Following a run through “Guelah Papyrus”, which featured an Oom Pa Pa signal, Phish delivered a sublime “Divided Sky” which teased, of all things, “Call to the Post” which fans will recognize from the Kentucky Derby.

The first set continued on with quick hits like “Weigh” and a fiery “Maze” before things slowed down a bit with the intricate movements of “Fluffhead”. After finding brief respite in “Fast Enough for You”, Phish closed out set one with “Daniel Saw the Stone”.

Opening up with the familiar drumbeat of “Also Sprach Zarathrustra”, set two got spacey right from the start. This flowed into what proved to be the improvisational highlight of the evening with an 18-minute “David Bowie” that was teeming with type II improvisation. After that wild run through the deep excesses of improvisation, things cooled down once again with the eternal pairing of “The Horse” and the singalong “Silent in the Morning”. Phish delivered more quick hits with “Rift” and “Suzy Greenberg” followed by an always welcome “You Enjoy Myself”.

Following the lengthy “YEM”, which saw allusions to everything from Speed Racer to The Beatles‘ “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”, drummer Jon Fishman came center stage for his unique telling of Prince‘s “Purple Rain”. This, of course, led back into Argent‘s “Hold Your Head Up” to signal the end of Fishman’s moment in the sun and things got back to normal with “My Sweet One”, followed by a powerful, set-closing “Cavern”. Phish returned to the stage and performed an a capella “Memories” sans microphones, and machine-gun Trey sent everyone home with Jimi Hendrix‘s “Fire”.
