The team behind London’s Royal Albert Hall has announced the famous music venue’s new initiative as touring and public concerts also remain on hiatus across the pond for the foreseeable future thanks to COVID-19.

The historic venue–RAH  plans to celebrate its 150th birthday in 2021–has launched its own livestream performance series with Royal Albert Home, which will air a new live performance of notable artists to broadcast from their homes around the world. The livestreams will air for free, but the venue is encouraging fans and viewers to donate any money if possible to help support Royal Albert Hall staff and operational costs. The first scheduled performer is Rufus Wainwright, who’s home set will air on Thursday (April 9th) at 8:15 p.m. local (3:15 p.m. EST).

“When push comes to shove, the Royal Albert Hall is my favourite venue in the UK. It is the perfect mix of both formal and fun,” Wainwright added in a statement to go with the venue’s announcement on Wednesday. “It is grand and intimate at the same time. Also it is where my mother Kate McGarrigle did her last concert in 2009. I am proud to be one of the first artists to give a Royal Albert Home concert from my home in Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles.”

Other artists already confirmed to perform in the coming weeks include cellist Peter Gregson (April 10th), Alfie Boe (April 12th), Richard Archer & Krysten Cummings (April 13th), and Roddy Woomble (April 14th), to name a few.

A statement shared by the venue also reads,

We’ve been here for the nation for almost 150 years in good times and bad. We exist to be open, to entertain, to inspire. In these extraordinary times closing our doors is the best way to look after the world; but why should that stop us from bringing you some of the world’s most talented artists?

Royal Albert Home will see artists sharing their work from their homes to yours.
