Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have shared the second single from their forthcoming album, Naked Garden, entitled, “Couldn’t Break Your Heart”.

The song finds Nelson and company in their element as a melodic guitar lick carries the intro into Lukas’ first lyrics, “I’m trying so hard to stay alone/I promised myself a heart of stone/But I’m breaking all the rules/in my head.” From there, Nelson takes listeners on a melancholy journey of what it means to try to love again, even when you know that just isn’t possible right now. The cymbals soon come crashing down as Nelson exclaims the song’s titular hook, “couldn’t break your heart.”

“I wrote ‘Couldn’t Break Your Heart’ about a really great friend of mine,” Nelson said in a statement to American Songwriter. “It’s a hard song to think about actually because without revealing too much. It’s a true story and was borne out of a real feeling. Even though we’ve parted, I think, because we still care and send love, our hearts were only torn from parting, not broken completely, perhaps our hearts are even stronger now.”

The material for Naked Garden, available everywhere on March 27th, came from the same recording sessions at Rick Rubin‘s Shangri-La Studio in Malibu, CA that produced the group’s 2019 album Turn Off The News (Build A Garden). Nelson said of the sessions, “This shows what the spirit of what those sessions at Shangri-La were. I love how raw it is, how true to us it is, and how real it is.”

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real will head out on tour in support of Naked Garden beginning on March 19th with a show at Luck Reunion in Spicewood, TX. From there, Nelson and company will tour the United States through the beginning of May, before taking a few weeks off and eventually heading over to Europe in June.
