Lukas Nelson and Shooter Jennings have teamed up for an updated recording of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”. The new take on the song shared on Thursday showcases the two country-inspired artists’ collaborative abilities and will appear on the soundtrack for the forthcoming season of Netflix‘s original series, The Ranch.
The new recording pulls a page right out of their famous fathers’ songbook, as “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” was recorded by their fathers Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings for the two’s 1978 collaboration album, Waylon & Willie. The song was originally co-written by Patsy and Ed Bruce and appeared on the latter’s 1976 self-titled album.
The updated recording of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” hears Lukas and Shooter deliver their relaxed take on the song, as both men trade off vocal duties just as effortlessly as their famous fathers.
“Lukas and I had a great time in the studio. We came up with an alternate rhythm that changes the vibe a little bit from the original — that gave us the space to make it our own,” Jennings mentioned in a statement to go with the song’s arrival. “He and I have had very close relationships with our fathers — they always were our Number One fans. I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to sing this song with my brother and just have fun with it.”
