On Monday night, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in support of their brand-new album, Turn Off The News (Build A Garden), which arrived last Friday via Fantasy Records.

Rocking a top hat à la Tom Petty from his Traveling Wilbury days, Lukas Nelson led his bandmates through “Bad Case”, off of their new album, with brother Micah Nelson lending an extra helping hand. Lukas took the vocal lead on the bluesy number, featuring an array of Western-themed visuals in the background, similar to the song’s original music video which was set in Texas. The sons of country icon Willie Nelson shared a mic to belt out the anthemic chorus, with their backing band adding some lush vocal harmonies.

Recorded at Shangri-La in Malibu and the Village Studios in West L.A., Turn Off The News (Build A Garden) was co-produced by Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real and John Alagia, who helmed the group’s debut self-titled effort in 2017. The band—consisting of Nelson, bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony Logerfo, percussionist Tato Melgar, and multi-instrumentalist Logan Metz—recorded 30 original songs during brief breaks between tours. The band tracked their sessions straight to analog tape, keeping overdubs to a minimum, while focusing on the live performances.

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real recruited an all-star cast of contributors for Turn Off The News (Build A Garden), including Sheryl Crow, Margo Price, Willie Nelson, Micah Nelson, Kesha, Shooter Jennings, Randy Houser, Lucius, Madison Ryann Ward, Hunter Elizabeth, and Neil Young.

In addition to an expansive tour in support of their new album, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real will offer support for The Rolling Stones at select stops on the band’s upcoming No Filter North American tour.
