Southern rock icon Lynyrd Skynyrd has officially joined the ranks of the many acts scheduled to call it quits this year. Today, the group has announced that they will extend their farewell tour, dubbed “The Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour”, to culminate in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, on September 2nd at EverBank Field, the stadium where the NFL’s Jaguars play. Special guests Jason Aldea and Kid Rock are also slated for the gig.
“This is a dream come true for the Lynyrd Skynyrd band. We’re going to rock the house here,” Johnny Van Zant stated at a press conference on Thursday. “My brother and Gary [Rossington] and Allen Collins started this band a long time ago. We are on our farewell tour. It’s time to wrap it up. To be able to play Jacksonville, here, with the Jags, come on. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
The upcoming “The Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour” will also feature special guest performances from Hank Williams Jr., Charlie Daniels Band, Bad Company, Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, Blackberry Smoke, and Blackfoot to celebrate their end with them.
When the band made the farewell tour announcement, Gary Rossington commented, “It’s hard to imagine, after all these years, the band that Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins and myself started back in Jacksonville, would resonate for this long and to so many generations of fans. I’m certain they are looking down from above, amazed that the music has touched so many.”
Lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant concluded, “We’ve been blessed by these great songs and the messages they carry to the fans. It’s been a true honor to try and fill in my brother’s footsteps for the past 31 years, keeping the music and his spirit, alive.”
Tickets for the final concert go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. April 30. with a VIP presale beginning on April 24. You can check out tour dates below, and grab tickets on the band’s website.
