Coming off of their debut Red Rocks Amphitheatre performance earlier this week, Colorado’s own Magic Beans have announced their forthcoming studio album, Off Leash, due out on Friday, June 21st.
Straying away from their regular studio experience, Magic Beans—comprised of guitarist Scott Hachey, keyboardist Casey Russell, bassist Chris Duffy, and drummer Cody Wales— sought out more “off leash” methods for the recording process and brought the studio to themselves. The quartet gathered everything they needed to record into Scott Hachey’s downtown Denver house, for three days of non-stop tracking. This resulted in a recording process that was not hindered by time or budget, allowing the band to truly dial in the sounds they wanted, while leaving time for spontaneous exploration and creativity.
The unique recording process resulted in a well-developed and mature album, yet doesn’t lose that home-made aesthetic the band desired. The majority of the tracks for Off Leash were recorded in the kitchen or living room, which features guests from the band’s close musical family adding brass, percussion, lap steel, banjo, and more.
Ahead of Magic Beans’ forthcoming Off Leash release, the band has shared the album’s lead single, “Feed The Beast”.
Scott Hachey explains, “This track draws heavily from the Minneapolis funk sound with a tight pocket, clean rhythm guitar, and heavy synths. We utilized classic equipment like a Juno 60, Linn Drum Machine, and Clavinet to get those famous tones and the lyrics put a tongue-in-cheek spin on it. This joint dumps like a truck.”
