The Marcus King Band swung by The Basement East in Nashville, TN on Saturday for a stop on the How Y’all Feeling? Tour. The hometown show for the Nashville-by-way-of-Greensville-South-Carolina bluesman saw King cover an array of artists, including Ted Nugent, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and more.

Courtesy of Music City Maven, a trove of videos from Saturday’s concert are available on YouTube. One incendiary video sees King and his bandmates Jack Ryan (drums), Stephen Campbell (bass), Justin Johnson (trumpet/trombone), Chris Spies (saxophone), and Mike Runyon (keys) stitching together the original “Always” with The Motor City Madman’s “Stranglehold”. Following a bluesy romp at the end of the Soul Insight track, King emerges on the other side with Sweaty Teddy’s iconic riff, proceeding to take the terrestrial rock radio staple out for a long ride.

Another stellar pairing from Saturday’s show finds a tender Marcus King delivering his own “Wildflowers & Wine” alongside Percy Sledge‘s “When A Man Loves A Woman”. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter set the mood with the cut from his 2020 solo album, El Dorado, dimming the lights inside The Basement East before going all out with a transition to “When A Man Loves A Woman”.

Saturday’s show also saw King cover a pair of country greats in Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings with “Whiskey River” and “Good Hearted Woman”. Playing in Music City, the selections by the two Highwaymen bore added significance as Jennings stands as a pillar of the Nashville industry whereas Willie famously left the town to forge his own way down in Austin. As opposed to the jammed-out covers of Nugent and Sledge, King plays the Willie and Waylon covers straight, though still managing to add some frontman charisma to the intro of “Good Hearted Woman”.
