On Saturday night, Umphrey’s McGee finished off their two-night run at Kalamazoo, MI’s Wings Event Center. After sharing the road together for three consecutive nights, the Marcus King Band welcomed keyboardist Joel Cummins for an exciting collaboration during their opening set. Later in the evening, Umphrey’s returned the favor by inviting out young guitarist and vocalist Marcus King as well as his band’s keys player, DeShawn “D-Vibes” Alexander, for a Jimi Hendrix cover.

While Umphrey’s McGee’s cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Power Of Soul” with Marcus King and DeShawn Alexander was a standout moment of Saturday night’s show, the evening also sported a number of other highlights. The group opened the show with “Nipple Trix”, a tune that the group hadn’t performed since August of 2017, marking a 45 show gap. In a particularly unusual fashion, following the band’s cover of “Power of Soul” and to close out their first frame, Umphrey’s segued “Puppet String” into the second half of “Nothing Too Fancy”, completing the version which they had started the night prior on February 2nd.

As for the group’s second set, the band offered up a number of classics from their more-regular catalog. With the majority of set two structured within a “JaJunk” sandwich, a highlight came during the band’s rendition of David Bowie and John Lennon’s “Fame” (housed within a “Utopian Fir” sandwich), marking the first time the tune had been played since August of last year and a 42-song gap. For the group’s encore, Umphrey’s McGee laid out a stellar rendition of the relatively rare fan-favorite “Front Porch”, marking the tune’s first performance in almost 100 shows (since January of 2017) and fourth performance since 2015.
