Nashville darling Margo Price welcomed the Christmas season with a cover of Joni Mitchell‘s “River”, shared on Tuesday. Prior to the official release, Price had debuted her rendition of the Blue track during her set at the Village of Love benefit for Planned Parenthood this past fall.

The cover also comes ahead of Price’s impending A Perfectly Imperfect Night at The Movies drive-in event at the Stardust Drive-In Theatre in Watertown, TN on December 2nd. The evening will see the premiere of her concert film Perfectly Imperfect at The Ryman, recorded in May 2018 at the legendary Nashville venue featuring special guest appearances from Sturgill SimpsonEmmylou Harris, and Jack White.

Stationed behind her lone Rhodes piano, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter provides a lonesome rendition of the Mitchell track. From the opening piano riff, the song instantly conjures yuletide visions with its classic carol-like sonics. Conversely, the lyrics paint a much darker picture of escaping it all by skating away on a river. In light of the travel restrictions imposed on many this year due to the pandemic, perhaps this season will inspire a greater appreciation for the “songs of joy and peace” and the holiday season. Perhaps many will realize that skating away from the holiday and loved ones this time of year is actually the last thing they want to do.
