“Instru-mental” sacred-steel-focused fusion rockers Marvelous Funkshun have shared a brand new track, “Truman”, ahead of a special hometown show supporting blues guitar firebrand Eric Gales at the Millennium Center in Winston-Salem, NC on December 28th.
The squealing pedal steel of Durell Randolph, nephew of sacred steel virtuoso Robert Randolph, soars over the top a heavy, guitar-driven groove as drummer Zach Landon creates a relaxed pocket that will have listeners nodding along. Guitarist and bandleader Sam Robinson plays a supportive role at first, locking in with New Orleans institution John “Papa” Gros on organ and Will Bagley on bass before wailing along with Randolph in a melodic melee of mutual marvelousness.
This latest release arrives following Marvelous Funkshun’s recent single “Harris the Hater“, which featured both Eric Gales and John “Papa” Gros, setting the stage for when the band reunites with Gales later this month. Gales isn’t the only artist of stature with whom MF has shared the stage. The quintet has performed with a growing list of musical luminaries from the late Kofi Burbridge to Snoop Dogg to funk legend George Porter Jr. The band even gave a nod to Porter’s foundational work with The Meters by including a cover of “Look-Ka Py Py” on its most recent LP, 2023’s Instru-Mental.
