Perhaps one of the biggest mainstream music news of the past week was the “Blurred Lines” lawsuit, in which an eight person jury found Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke, and T.I. to be guilty of plagiarizing Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Get It On.” The lawsuit required the guilty parties to pay $7.3 million to Gaye’s family, and the trio were displeased with the verdict.
Robin Thicke, Pharrell, and T.I. Issue Statement About Marvin Gaye Plagiarism Suit
Regardless as to whether you find the lawsuit valid, Gaye’s family certainly proved their point, right? How much more than $7,300,000 could someone really ask for? A lot more, apparently.
CBS News is reporting that Gaye’s family is taking a closer listen to Pharrell’s hit song “Happy,” in comparison to Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t That Peculiar.” You can listen to the mash-up below:
The family did admit that they were listening to the similarities between the two songs, as Nona Gaye, Marvin’s 40 year old daughter said “I’m not going to lie. I do think they sound alike.” However, when asked about potential legal action, Janis Gaye, Marvin’s ex-wife, said “We’re not in that space. We’re just in the moment today and we’re satisfied.”
Well, considering that one of Marvin Gaye’s most famous lyrics is “You know we’ve got to find a way to bring some lovin’ here today,” it seems that his family may not quite be getting the message that Mr. Gaye initially intended through his music.
