On Friday night, Matador! Soul Sounds and Cory Wong Band made their Colorado debut at Cervantes’ Other Side in Denver. Both acts were in proper form for the evening, bringing tight-laced funk to the intimate venue. Cory Wong and his band were a hilarious way to start the night, with Cory opening his performance with an extended Powerpoint-esque presentation on smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz. Rife with jokes and a camp-y demeanor throughout, Cory’s banter was a highlight of the night. However, this certainly did not overshadow the music, which was impeccably clean and high energy.

Matador! Soul Sounds, the project led by Eddie Roberts of The New Mastersounds and Alan Evans of Soulive, took the stage as headliners for the evening, finally bringing the highly anticipated act to Colorado. The majority of the group’s set pulled from their debut album Get Ready, which was released earlier in March. Each member of the group stands out, though last night, vocalists Kim Dawson (Pimps of Joytime) and  Adryon de León (Orgone) truly shined. At the start of the show, Adryon reminded attendees that this was not a supergroup or a side project, declaring that this project has its own legs—a statement that fans are no doubt happy with after last night’s performance. With one extended set, the group worked through a number of their originals and two covers, with the encore of the night being fan favorite “Covfefe”, a tune that draws its name from President Donald J. Trump’s bewildering typo in a viral tweet last year.
