Verve Records has shared another preview of its upcoming tribute to 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico with Matt Berninger covering “I’m Waiting For The Man”. I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to The Velvet Underground & Nico is out on September 24th.
The National frontman takes a stripped-down approach to Lou Reed‘s ode to the jones. Gone are any of the fuzzed-out, droning guitars and instead we’re left with Berninger’s crooning as he waits on the corner of Lexington and 125th Street (one-two-five) for the eponymous man. Fans may remember Berninger debuted his Velvets cover on Fallon back in December from a set that very well could have been the man’s Brownstone up three flights of stairs.
Also set to appear on I’ll Be Your Mirror are Courtney Barnett, Iggy Pop & Matt Sweeney, Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), Kurt Vile & The Violators, St Vincent & Thomas Bartlett, Sharon Van Etten with Angel Olsen, Thurston Moore & Bobby Gillespie, Andrew Bird & Lucius, Fontaines DC, and King Princess. The cover album was announced earlier this month with Kurt Vile & The Violators’ rendition of “Run Run Run“.
