[3/28/23]: Maurice “MOBETTA” Brown will assemble a group of talented friends in the Big Easy for a late-night get-down during Jazz Fest at New Orleans, LA’s Toulouse Theatre on Sunday, April 30th (technically early a.m. May 1st). Tickets are available here.
Brown’s band lineup for the Toulouse Theatre performance will feature a number of artists who, like him, have built successful careers at the intersection of various different genres. Guitarist Eric Krasno (Soulive), drummer Adam Deitch (Lettuce, Break Science), and Erick “Jesus” Coomes (Lettuce) all have a range of hip-hop credentials to their names in addition to their more well-known funk-facing projects. Pedrito Martinez is globally renowned for his wide-ranging Afro-Cuban percussion knowledge and ability, but fans may have also caught him performing with the likes of rock stalwart Bruce Springsteen. As yet unannounced special guests will add to the star power for a collaborative blowout truly worthy of Jazz Fest after dark.
Trumpet player, producer, and rapper Maurice “MOBETTA” Brown has charted a unique stylistic course throughout his career. As a lauded jazz musician with a bebop background and contemporary urban sensibilities, Maurice has become a sought-after talent in various stylistic realms. In jazz circles, he remains a celebrated soloist and bandleader who has released a string of boundary-pushing albums under his own name, often incorporating his abilities as a rapper. In the blues-rock world, he won a Grammy Award with Tedeschi Trucks Band for 2011’s Best Blues Album, Revelator. In hip-hop, R&B, and beyond, his recording, touring, and production resume includes collaborations with Aretha Franklin, Macy Gray, De La Soul, Kamasi Washinton, The Roots, Prodigy, Lettuce, and more. Over the last five years, Maurice “MOBETTA” Brown has become a staple sideman for Anderson .Paak, touring the world as part of his backing band, Free Nationals, and mounting Las Vegas residencies with his Grammy-sweeping Bruno Mars collab, Silk Sonic.
While the Maurice “MOBETTA” Brown & Friends lineup set to appear during New Orleans Jazz Fest is a one-time-only affair, the members of the roster have plenty of recent experience playing together. In addition to Coomes and Deitch’s busy touring schedule with Lettuce, Krasno’s various scheduled Deitch collabs as part of Fest by Nite, and MOBETTA and Deitch’s recent Okeechobee PoWoW! connection, Maurice and Jesus last week performed together on The Tonight Show as part of Talib Kweli and Madlib‘s backing band.
