As a lauded jazz musician with a bebop background and contemporary urban sensibilities, Maurice has become a sought-after talent in various stylistic realms. In jazz circles, he remains a celebrated soloist and bandleader who has released a string of boundary-pushing albums under his own name, often incorporating his abilities as a rapper. In the blues-rock world, he won a Grammy Award with Tedeschi Trucks Band for 2011’s Best Blues Album, Revelator. In hip-hop, R&B, and beyond, his recording, touring, and production resume includes collaborations with Aretha Franklin, Macy GrayDe La SoulKamasi Washinton, The Roots, Prodigy, Lettuce, and more. While the Maurice “MOBETTA” Brown & Friends lineup set to appear during New Orleans Jazz Fest is a one-time-only affair, the members of the roster have plenty of recent experience playing together. In addition to Coomes and Deitch’s busy touring schedule with Lettuce, Krasno’s various scheduled Deitch collabs as part of Fest by Nite, and MOBETTA and Deitch’s recent Okeechobee PoWoW! connection, Maurice and Jesus last week performed together on The Tonight Show as part of Talib Kweli and Madlib‘s backing band.
