On Saturday, October 3rd, pianist Melvin Seals & JGB took part in Democracy Comes Alive, a one-day, nonpartisan virtual music festival aimed at channeling the power of music to make a critical impact on civic engagement in this November’s elections and beyond. The one-song performance from the longtime Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist and his revamped backing band comprised of guitarist John Kadlecik, drummer Jeremy Hoenig, and bassist John-Paul McLean delivered a lively rendition of Little Milton blues classic and Jerry Garcia Band go-to “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”.

The quartet’s eight-minute, pro-shot performance welcomed viewers into the friendly confines of San Francisco’s Light Rail Studios, where they hosted A Very Melvin Birthday celebration last month. Seals lead the charge on lead vocals for the uptempo 12-bar blues song, which also featured some wonderful solo work on guitar courtesy of Kadlecik.

Seals took the song’s second solo, and hearing the lush tones of his organ is enough to cure any Deadhead’s seasonal blues heading into the winter months. The video’s multi-angle, semi-psychedelic editing style and JGB graphic overlays almost allowed viewers to feel as if they were right there inside the studio, grooving alongside the band.
